Boudica, Queen of The Iceni is favorably
reviewed by Sara Wilson in Historical
Novel Review: "Joseph E. Roesch has
obviously taken great pains with his
research and his efforts have paid
dividends. The setting and characters have a
strongly authentic feel, whilst the various
religious, social and political beliefs of
the 1st century AD have been recreated with
great care and an eye for detail." Click

Boudica, Queen of the Iceni receives
laudatory review from James MacKillop in the
Syracuse (NY) New Times:
"A handful of
historical figures, like Cleopatra of Egypt
or T.E. Lawrence of Arabia, led such
fabulous lives they feel like creatures of
legend or folklore. Such was the tall,
green-eyed, red-haired beauty usually
pictured driving her chariot into battle,
Boudica of ancient Britain. . . . What
Hamilton writer Joseph E. Roesch has done in
his fast-moving novel Boudica, Queen of
the Iceni . . . is to bring her alive
for the contemporary reader. . . .
Following the historical record means that
the novel's main character is already fixed
in a narrative arc. There are three
episodes: Roman oppression, dizzying native
victories and eventual defeat. Boudica
speaks contemporary dialogue, but Roesch
does not attempt to modernize her. The
warrior queen may worship a mother goddess,
but she never becomes a Californian New Ager.
Roesch explains how Boudica's society,
hardly a feminist paradise, allowed her to
take a position of leadership, and why men
chose to follow her. . . . Roesch's first
purpose in writing Boudica appears to be
entertainment, with instruction coming in
much later. He unmistakably has researched
every scene of the action, but he wears his
erudition lightly. . . . Roesch the
novelist writes with authenticity without
drawing attention to how much he knows.
Better yet, he wants you to share in the
wonders the warrior queen wrought."
